TCM Treatment for Cold Sores and Herpes

Cold sores are often caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). They are a sign of what TCM refers to as internal heat or Yin (cooling mechanism) deficiency leading to heat. Here are some remedies for both TCM and holistic approaches. These remedies can help soothe cold sores by quickly releasing heat and toxicity from the body. They may also potentially reduce the recurrence of outbreaks.

TCM-Based Treatments:

Chinese herbology is easily the MOST sophisticated medicine on the planet right now. I’ll debate anyone anywhere on it. Let’s go! I discuss the herbs in this blog site to educate my clients and the public. I want y’all to know there are natural ways to deal with ANY medical condition. The efficacy of the herbs so well established, there’s no reason to hide ingredients or formulas for profit. But, this isn’t a professional prescription for you in particular. Get some help from the person who got 7650 hours training in Chinese Medicine.

If you are going to buy them and try them on your own, I don’t recommend it. It’s complex and requires a TCM view of the body. In TCM, we don’t take herbs for symptoms. We take them for conditions.

  • Symptoms POINT to conditions.
  • Conditions create symptoms.
  • Treat conditions, the symptoms disappear.
  • Treat the symptoms and not the condition, the symptoms come back because the condition was unaddressed.

You should consult with a professional, especially if you take any kind of medication, over the counter or prescription. Herbs mix with drugs and can cause problems. Just because they are natural doesn’t mean they are safe to take willy nilly. You have been warned.

Final note before discussing herb specifics, the last word in TCM Herbal Formulas describe the form of the herb.

  • Pian is a pill or tablet.
  • San is a powder or ground concentrate.
  • Tang is a tea or soup.
  • Wan is a round teapill.
  • So if you’re looking for Yin Qiao San, Yin Qiao Pian is the same or similar formula in a different delivery form.

TCM Herbal Remedies:

Several well-known and standardized TCM herbal formulas are traditionally used to address heat. They also help with viral infections like cold sores and herpes outbreaks. Acupuncture Therapy

Acupuncture is an effective tool for immune enhancement and detoxification. Sessions will detox and strengthen your filters (Liver and Kidneys) and boost your immunity and brain health. Acupoints like LI4, LV3, TaiYang, KD6, & LV8 can enhance yin energy and purge heat. Always see a qualified Acupuncture physician for this kind of acupuncture therapy. Chiropractors and Physical Therapists are NOT trained on how to understand, know or even do these kinds of treatments. It requires specialty treatment. If they offer it, RUN. Report them to Tallahassee.

Topical Applications:

  • Chrysanthemum Tea Compress: Brew a strong chrysanthemum tea. Let it cool. Dip a clean cloth into the tea and apply it directly to the cold sore. Chrysanthemum has cooling properties, which can help reduce inflammation and pain.
  • Green Tea: Green tea contains catechins, which have antiviral properties. Steep a green tea bag, let it cool, and apply it to the affected area for a soothing effect.
  • Honey and Licorice Root Powder: Licorice contains glycyrrhizin, known for its antiviral properties. Mix licorice root powder with honey and apply it to the cold sore. Leave it on for 15–20 minutes, then rinse off. Repeat as needed.

Western Herbal Remedies and Supplements

  1. Lysine:
    • Purpose: Lysine is an amino acid that can inhibit the replication of the herpes simplex virus. Taking it as a supplement may reduce the frequency of outbreaks.
    • Dosage: 1,000 mg daily as a preventive measure. If an outbreak occurs, you can increase it to 3,000 mg. Maintain this dose for the duration of the outbreak. Then return to the maintenance dose.
  2. Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis):
    • Purpose: Lemon balm is effective in reducing the duration and severity of cold sores. It has natural antiviral properties and helps to soothe inflammation.
    • Usage: Apply lemon balm cream or extract directly to the cold sore several times daily. Drinking lemon balm tea can also help calm the body and boost the immune system.
  3. Echinacea:
    • Purpose: This immune-boosting herb can help the body resist viral infections, including cold sores.
    • Usage: Take echinacea supplements or tea at the first sign of a cold sore to boost immunity. You can take it daily for a week, then pause, as continuous use can reduce its effectiveness. Only use when needed.
  4. Zinc:
    • Purpose: Zinc has been shown to help reduce the frequency and duration of cold sore outbreaks.
    • Usage: Use a topical zinc ointment on the cold sore. Alternatively, take a 15–30 mg zinc supplement daily. This supports immune function.

Diet and Lifestyle Tips for Outbreak Prevention

  1. Avoid Foods High in Arginine: Arginine is an amino acid that can encourage HSV replication. Foods high in arginine include chocolate, nuts (especially peanuts and almonds), seeds, and soy products. Limit these foods, especially during an outbreak.
  2. Eat Lysine-Rich Foods: Lysine may help prevent HSV outbreaks. Incorporate foods like yogurt, fish, chicken, and potatoes into your diet, as they are naturally high in lysine.
  3. Stay Hydrated: Drinking adequate water and herbal teas can help flush out toxins. This helps keep the immune system functioning optimally. It may also help reduce cold sore outbreaks.
  4. Reduce Stress: Stress is a known trigger for cold sores. Practice stress-reduction techniques like deep breathing exercises, yoga, and Qigong meditation to help prevent outbreaks.
  5. Get Plenty of Rest: Rest supports immune health. Make sure you’re getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night, which helps your body defend itself against viruses.

Other Holistic Suggestions:

  1. Propolis: This natural substance produced by bees has antiviral properties that can help shorten the duration of cold sores. Apply a propolis cream or ointment directly to the sore.
  2. Essential Oils:
    • Tea Tree Oil: Known for its antiviral and antibacterial properties. Dilute with a carrier oil and apply to the cold sore 1-2 times daily.
    • Peppermint Oil: Also contains antiviral properties and can be soothing. Dilute and apply in the same manner as tea tree oil. Watch use in low testorerone or males wanting to have children. Peppermint is a testosterone suppressant.*
  3. Aloe Vera Gel: Aloe vera has soothing, cooling properties. Applying pure aloe vera gel to a cold sore can reduce pain and inflammation and speed up healing.

These TCM and Western remedies can help when combined with dietary and lifestyle adjustments. You may experience fewer and less severe cold sore outbreaks. For long-term results, maintain a balanced lifestyle. Managing stress is also important. These strategies are key in preventing cold sores and herpes outbreaks altogether.

*Several studies have indicated that both peppermint and spearmint may have testosterone-lowering effects, particularly in animal studies and in women with conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In studies on female subjects with high androgen levels, daily consumption of spearmint tea was shown to reduce free testosterone levels, although the effects on total testosterone varied. For example, one study found that drinking spearmint tea twice a day for 30 days led to a significant reduction in testosterone in women with PCOS(Everlywell)(MedShun).

Animal studies have provided additional insights. For instance, in research with male rats, consumption of peppermint and spearmint caused a reduction in serum testosterone and disrupted the function of enzymes critical for testosterone production. Some researchers suggest that mint’s effects could be linked to increased oxidative stress in certain brain regions that regulate hormone production(MorningSteel.com)(Anabolic Men).

However, there is limited direct research on how peppermint affects testosterone levels in men specifically.(Because – who’s going to fund that SHIT!! LOL. Back to the regularly scheduled brain washing -> While these findings suggest potential testosterone-lowering effects, especially with high or frequent consumption, more research is needed to confirm these effects in human males(MedShun).
